Atom was essentially an arms dealer, but more preceisely speculated on the flow of arms. The shareholders represented Very Old money, individuals from Entropica, the deceased held in a virtual afterlife.

He lived the life of a chased man. He remained in espace except on rare occasions. Out of it, he was prone to withdrawal from endocannabinoids: fits of diaphoresis, anger, and anxiety.

In Book 2 the flow of arms is towards Freedomriders in the so-called Green Zone. He is forced out of espace to confront Blechtel CEO Nat Grimly. Nat isn't angry about the weapons. He wants to change Atom's mind about a symbolic outcome: a publicity stunt. The amount of capital gains the deal entails would make refusing it career suicide.
