A non-endocannabinoid AI, one of eleven biomechanical devices charged with the security of the non-corporate entity Mother. See Mother and below. Echo was Manmachine's handler, a role that initially enabled, and eventually obstructed, their forbidden relationship: their story, and its emotional anguish, is extensively covered in the Manmachine epic. The son of Echo and Manmachine appears episodically after the second book, and he is himself the protagonist of Books 13 onward, after the close of events described in the first Manmachine epic.
